Fan - Creator Interactions

At the start of my YouTube internship, I was asked to design a small research project to run during a major creator event — just days into the role. Tasked with exploring fan or creator behaviour, I developed a study under tight time constraints to make the most of this unique research opportunity.

Objective:
  • 🎯 Explore user behaviour by leveraging a rare research opportunity: direct access to a large, co-located group of creators and fans.
Process:
  • ⚙️ Designed a three-frame comic strip activity where participants illustrated meeting a creator, collecting a memento, and sharing the experience.
  • ⚙️ Coordinated with event organisers to include the activity in a scheduled session at the creator event.
  • ⚙️ Facilitated the session and collected responses from over 100 participants
  • ⚙️ Analysed the comic strip submissions and produced an internal report detailing key themes and behaviours.
Challenges:
  • 🧩 Delivered the entire study within two weeks, far earlier than most intern projects — a unique and fast-paced challenge.
  • 🧩 Faced difficulties in analysing a large volume of handwritten and illustrated data.

Results/Conclusion:

Despite a tight timeline and low initial expectations—given that most of my time at the event was dedicated to a separate project—I successfully delivered a unique study that produced valuable, illustrated insights into how fans interact with creators, collect mementos, and share those experiences across platforms. The comic strip method proved highly effective, offering rich, visually expressive data that resonated with both participants and my team. The approach was praised for its creativity and impact, and my final report received strong positive feedback. My mentor even ensured the comic strips were preserved for future internal research use, including posters and presentations.
